This had the bones (ha, fossil pun) of a strong romance, but unfortunately these elements were rather overshadowed by overwriting in the form of too many cliches and similes. I appreciated the representation of a Black heroine with a non-traditional family structure, emotional complexity, and the likability of the male lead, who also had a good backstory. I really liked the ideas, but ultimately the writing just didn't make it for me.
