The Love Wager
by Lynn Painter
4.5 stars! This is my fourth (?) Lynn Painter book and she’s turned into a romance author I’ll come back to again and again. Her writing is so effortlessly fun and hilarious and I have a delightful time reading them!
This delivered on a lot of levels:
-dual POV (the supreme overlord of book POVs)
-fake dating (to a WEDDING, no less)
-CATS!
-niche pop culture references I live for (New Girl, ilysm)
-an absolute pining MESS of a man
-throw in witty banter and some spice and I’m yours
Hallie and Jack were adorbs. I love em. However, I DON’T love the miscommunication trope, which unfortunately had its foot on the GAS for nearly the entire book. Also, I am so so sooooo tired of the third act breakup. When will I be free of seeing it in EVERY SINGLE ROMANCE BOOK? I am begging on my hands and knees for new relationship obstacles, and I especially can’t stand ones caused by miscommunication. It all comes back to miscommunication, the evil mistress!!! *shakes fist at sky*
Other than that, A JOY! Painter has nearly single handedly prevented me from spiraling into this book slump.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC! All opinions are my own.
