I picked up The Vikings by Else Roesdahl for two reasons: firstly, as a requirement for my reading challenge, and secondly, out of a general interest in Scandinavian history and culture.

Despite this interest, there is no getting away from the fact that this is essentially a historical textbook, and is written like one. It is not written with the intention of entertaining the average history fan, but instead as a serious academic text for scholars. That doesn't make the subject of Roesdahl's research any less fascinating. It just makes for a more demanding and less accessible reading experience.
