Ugh, this was almost really, really good. It had all the necessary parts to become one of my favorite books by this author, but it really disappointed me in some key areas that I can’t ignore. Mainly, how Iz’s issues with his parents are resolved. It didn’t feel right for him at all, and it ended up going in the complete opposite direction of what I wanted and what I expected from everything that was said and told. His parents also went from being horribly homophobic to suddenly not at all with no explanation or reasoning, and it all felt unrealistic.

All of that doesn’t even get into how incredibly annoyed I got with Iz at a couple points in the book. I can objectively understand that some people self destruct when struggling, but this man just acted plain old stupid. You feel like you rely on your best friend too much? The only logical solution is to ignore him for days on end and then get pissy and sad when he stops contacting you. They way I rolled my eyes. Don’t even get me started on how oblivious he is. Sometimes oblivious idiots in love are cute, and sometimes it makes me want to punt a character into the atmosphere.

Anyway. Could’ve been amazing. The whole idea behind the ‘switched’ storyline was clever and original, and it had some really good parts with wonderful found family. Just fucked itself with the unrealistic reconciliation that felt like a massive finger to every queer kid who got treated like shit and never had any support or love, and whose parents miraculously never miraculously had a personality transplant later in life.
