dark sad slow-paced

Some interesting reflections on the futility and cruelty of war, the way it permeates the life of soldiers even long after they’ve returned home. Usually I don’t have an issue with nonlinear narratives, but this one jumps around so much with no chapters so I often had no idea which events took place first. And the women in this book… oh boy. Every woman the protagonist comes across (and there are a few) is either falling at his feet or ready to lay down her life to further his and it got very tiring
