It's very easy to get lost among all the progressive rhetoric that's being pumped into the media, whether you're reading tweets, newspapers, magazines, books, or blog posts. Angela Davis, through a series of interviews, articles and speeches, provided me with a way to ground myself among this onslaught of ideologies. She makes prison abolition tangible, and gave me ways to try to explain this movement to individuals deeply pulled into society's ideas of criminality, violence, and punishment. Additionally, through her insistence that the struggle for freedom is a global one, Davis provides groundwork for a global anti-racist movement.

In terms of direct facts, this collection taught me a lot about G4S and its role in international security and militarization. This company has its tendrils entrenched all over the globe, from its private prison subsidiary (GEO Group) to violent "security" in Palestine. I've read a lot ABOUT Davis but this was my first opportunity to learn from her words. I will definitely be reading more of her writing.
