The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli
2.0

1. She’s really obsessed with the idea of dating
2. Which is, you know, not a bad thing, but honestly I’d rather read about something else instead because it’s such a boring topic and that was a waste of time
3. How did she suddenly love herself after she got a boyfriend..
4. Mental health issue was briefly mentioned but there’s no further explanation
5. A+ on diversity but these characters are flat and not well developed. Sometimes the author would mention abby or olivia or nick and i’d be like okay, who’s that again and are they supposed to be important? If not, why are they here? I can’t even tell the difference between her moms or reid’s parents. These background characters are just... there. They really have no personality and no trait to distinct them which essentially feels like they’re all the same person and it got all smudged together and i’m confused
6. Overall not an awful book but I don’t really like the message that goes with it, like everything’s awful when you’re single but when you’re not, you become 100% cooler and not sad at all which I don’t think is true and it’s sort of a toxic idea.

Final verdict? 2/5
