I was nervous to pick this up. Seeing so many people love this made me nervous. Also seeing the tweets about chapter 21 got me scared, more on that later.
Sometimes long chapters annoy me. It can affect my mood which is stupid. But as I own the audiobook I decided to listen along. Which definitely made me get through it much quicker.
Soon as I started the audiobook I was captivated. I couldn't put it down. I found myself listening for over an hour before even noticing I had been listening for that long. Which never happens to me. I just wanted to carry on the story. See where it went.
Chapter 21. This was dark. Extremely dark. From beginning to end. I have no words to describe how this made me feel. I only know my anxiety did not like it. I had to put the book down for the night after finishing it. Listening to the audiobook probably made it harder to digest. This is probably the most graphic chapter I've ever read. If I've read worse I've forgotten it.
This book was dark. I know people said it was. But you never know until you actually pick it up. The graphic detail was something else. It never ends once it starts. The writing really brought the world to life. The atmosphere was intense.
This feels more an Adult than YA book. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this is sold as YA.
Let's end of a lighter note. Some characters that I enjoyed.
Kitay. I loved his personality. He made me laugh at times. He needs protecting. I'm scared for him in book two.
Jiang. Again I loved his personality while at the school. He was childish but knew when to be serious.
Ramsa. A legit child who needs protecting at all costs.
Altan. I wanted to like him but he gave me bad vibes at first. But everything is explained later on.
Rin. I liked her but she also annoyed me throughout the book. The way she wants power I want to mean some longterm growth in her character. Her anger and need for revenge will make for an intruding book two.
I feel like I need a little break from this world before picking up the next book. But I'm excited and nervous.
