Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore
by Robin Sloan
Recommended by Ellen, Jo and Andrea
Ellen's review: A new twist on an old fantasy trope---rather than modern magicians vs. traditional magicians, this was modern nerds vs. traditional nerds in a race to solve some centuries-old code whose solution promises immortality. Scholars in robes vs Google geeks. The concept was great, the characters were well-drawn, the images of the fantastic sites in the book were vivid and the conclusion was satisfying. I think it would be a good book for older HS kids as well as adults. Definitely a fun read.
