The Legacy of Villains
by Juliet Lockwood
“The daughter of Captain Hook did not feel fear”
This was such a fun Neverland retelling! I zoomed through it and found a new nickname that I absolutely love.
“My darling girl, I think you might be my new favourite toy”
“Three days, darling girl. My castle is somewhere in the woods, and your father is somewhere in my dungeon. Better hold on to that sword tight – who knows what kind of nightmares lurk behind these trees?”
We are introduced to the main character Jolie Hook as she races against time and magic to save her father, Captain Hook, from Peter Pan. The adventure through the Neverwood was great. You didn’t know what was real and what was magic, it was exhilarating.
“Her fists caught a handful of crunchy brown leaves, which squealed in annoyance until she dropped them and they skittered back up into their tree.”
I absolutely love stories that have sentient buildings/places. The Jolly Roger, The Neverwood, and The Castle all had minds of their own and it just makes the story so much more enjoyable – and usually adds more humour!
“Tinkerbell was known as the best assassin across the land…if that winged snake lifts a finger against my father I’ll feed her to an angry spine-fish.”
There were so many funny little comments or moments: the bird with 2 heads! Loved them! Also, I’m not very familiar with the details of Peter Pan, so I definitely missed some things, but I did not see the end for those birds coming!
“Just looking out for my toys, he decided. But Peter knew that if he had a heart, it might’ve beat for Jolie Hook at that moment.”
I had 2 main problems:
1. The world-building was a little lacking. I think that’s because it is a Neverland retelling so its expected that you know the story and background enough, but I would have liked it to be a little more fleshed out, a little more whimsical and fairy-tale-like. Especially since its been so long since I’ve read anything in this retelling.
2. Jo was kinda…stupid?😅 She fell for every trap that was set up. She even fell for the ones that weren’t set up for her too.
BUT…
I am eagerly awaiting, and hoping for, a book 2!
“If you want me to bleed so badly for you,” he said, voice rough, “all you have to do is ask.”
Thank you so much to Book of Matches Media and the author for providing me with an ARC for an honest review!
