As a long-term consumer of chick-lit and romance I realized I have never actually read ‘pride and prejudice’ in full, despite being very familiar with the characters and plot. I “read” this as an audiobook on my runs the past two weeks and enjoyed it immensely. I have often heard the criticism that the book completely ignores anything going on in the world outside of the insular society it’s concerned with. While this is accurate, I would suggest both that the novel is representative of the narrow worldview women in society had at that time, and that I’m not sure where that sort of criticism can end. Not every book can be about everything. To that end, on the flipside, the book left out many descriptions of society that I would’ve loved to hear more about, like their clothing and primping.
