A Taxonomy of Love by Rachael Allen
5.0

This book was super cute. It starts the summer before seventh grade when Hope moves in next door to Spencer and they become best friends. Spencer, who has Tourette's Syndrome and doesn't always make friends easily, thinks she is the most beautiful human and falls in love with her immediately. The story follows their relationship through middle school and high school, as they date other people and face other issues in their friendship. I appreciated the portrayal of someone with TS, as I've been learning more about it from people with the condition on IG. The book, to me, appeared to do a good job pointing out the stereotypes and assumptions and showing what life can be like but I can't speak from lived experience so don't take my word for it. The will they/won't they unrequited love aspect of the story was sometimes heart-wrenching but also entertaining and made me want to keep reading, as at that age I was often the girl with feelings for a guy friend who showed no interest and could relate to Spencer's plight.
