The Madman's Daughter
by Megan Shepherd
I don't even know what to say when it comes to expressing my love for this book! I went into it looking for a creepy and chilling story, and that's exactly what I got!
I wasn't familiar with The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells before reading this book, but now I must say that I am very excited to check it out. I can't say one bad thing about this book other than the ending killed me. But really that wasn't even a bad thing because good books are supposed to shock you with the ending, right?! I read this book in three sittings over the course of one day because I couldn't put it down!! The story was fast paced and thrilling, and at some points very gory. The fact that it was a historical book just added to the creepiness of the events. Also, Ms Shepherd does an amazing job with plot twists!
The characters were so well written. Juliet was a wonderful main character that was a pleasure to read about. Then there was her father who, oddly enough, didn't creep me out as much as his actions. When he was engaged in normal conversation he didn't seem mad at all. Ms Shepard did a fantastic job in creating his character to have almost split personalities. Moving on to the boys of this book. Ms Shepard wrote both of these boys so well that I was literally changing my mind about who I wanted Juliet to end up with. I'll start with Montgomery. Wow. I liked him from the very beginning. He was mysterious, yet familiar. I'm a Montgomery fan, myself. Then there's Edward. I liked Edward for the majority of the book. He was also very mysterious, but I liked his manners.
The revelations toward the end of the book, as well as that shocking abandonment! AHHH, I just couldn't take it! This book was FANTASTIC! Overall, this book exceeded my expectations, and I'm sooo glad that I read it! I needed the next book yesterday, but unfortunately, I've got to wait a while...
