I saw this book around a lot and it sounded interesting. I didn’t even realize it was a part of a series until I was about half way through. I saw someone else post about it and was surprised! I think that just goes to show they can be read out of order. This book was something new and different for me. I initially rated this 4 stars but after sitting with it and writing my review.. I’m knocking it down to 3.5 stars. This is still a great read but I had some issues with the plot.
One of my favorite things about this book was the awesome females! We have several female characters that shine throughout this story. Our main character, Fatma, was such a fun and interesting character. I loved her and her suits so much. Her love interest was also pretty awesome and knew how to kick some butt. Agent Hadia joins the mix and I loved her fresh perspective to things. These women know how to take care of themselves and it was fun watching them do so. They were well written and I appreciated that.
The plot was interesting and I liked the magical elements that were mixed in. Although, it was kind of a messy at times. I found myself having more questions than answers. Throughout the book there’s many elements thrown in that made it feel much more convoluted than it needed to be. It as also extremely predictable and too obvious what was going to happen. Regardless, I still did enjoy my time with this story.
Something I found odd was that Fatma worked for the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities, and is surprised by supernatural beings and elements? I didn’t really understand how things could be so surprising to her. She’s the best in her field and yet misses so much? She didn’t seem to understand or believe things that are supernatural and/or enchanted. I just found that surprising.
Overall, I did really enjoy this book and I would recommend it. Just don’t be too shocked when you figure out some of the main plot points. If you enjoy reading about women in power and literally kicking butt then this is a great one for you! I will definitely be open to reading more books from this author in the future.
