Helen of Troy: Goddess, Princess, Whore
by Bettany Hughes
informative
reflective
I love this book, which examines different perspectives on Helen from across millenia: Mycenaean princess, Spartan queen, cult fertility goddess, famous beauty, unfaithful wife, agent of destruction, kidnapped victim, and so many more. There are so many different and conflicting versions of her story. This isn't just a retelling of the myths, it's an examination of how Helen's story has been shaped by the different cultures of those who have portrayed, regarded or worshipped her.
