I loved this book when I read it as a child, probably partly because I associated it so much with my grandmother. And I still think it’s good. It’s beautifully written, and the friendships are fantastic. But it’s so racist. I think I ignored the racism because The Secret Garden is so much worse, but it’s very much present in this book too. I do think that a lot of it would still hold up, but I probably wouldn’t intentionally recommend this to children.
