Who said this was like The Mummy? Hmm? As a fan of that movie and even some of its sequels, I think about it often. I can confirm the similarities: there’s a tomb, an FMC with little street smarts, and a rough-around-the-edges guy (and that’s me being generous).
The story as a whole is an easy, fast-paced read. There is fun to be had with the storyline. I appreciated what the story could be. For instance, if the characters aged up a bit, this would be a good time. Instead, the FMC was a tough sell for me. She’s naive, makes questionable choices, and doesn’t really grow from them. Given her age, I know the author tried to make her headstrong, but it just didn’t land for me.
And let’s talk romance. There were moments where I almost got that delicious slow-burn tension I love, but it didn’t fully hit its stride.
I have to circle back. By categorizing it as The Mummy, I automatically made the characters similar, which I guess is why I love that movie because the storyline wasn’t as important to me. If my expectations had been right, I likely would have enjoyed it more. Plenty of readers love this book, so it very likely was that.
So, should you read it? Consider these things first:
- You’re good just enjoying the ride and not overthinking it.
- You like stories where an innocent FMC starts pushing boundaries.
- Cleopatra’s tomb and ancient mysteries are calling your name.
- You love a gorgeous cover for your shelf.
