I wanted to read this for a long time now and finally listened to it (German audio book, don't know it if was a shortened version). A lot of people raved about this book a few years ago and I always wanted to know what the hype was about.
Let's start with the positive things: I liked the setting and the atmosphere. While I didn't like Shazi that much, I still had a lot of respect for her. Also, the reveal around how the premise of this book came to be was really cool in my opinion.
Sadly, this story really wasn't for me. Except for sockholm syndrome I really don't see what happened to make Shazi go from "I hate this man, I will kill him" to "I love him, he must be protected at all costs". It just didn't sit right with me how that relationship developed. .. And since the romance part is the most important thing in this book, not liking it shaped my perception of the whole thing.
The writing style was beautiful in general, but to be honest it was trying a little too hard to sound pretty and had a lot of unnecessarily complicated senteces as a result.
