Somewhere South of Hell – Book 2 by Ronald Kelly is a chapbook that holds two unsettling tales that focus on body horror and death!
Content Warnings:
Mention of dog death, death & gore.
Mention of dog death, death & gore.
In these two shorts, we meet a man that has made a poor choice when thirsty, and a woman whose curiosity gets the best of her. In each tale, Ronald Kelly brings the horror yet again!
Here are my thoughts on each tale:
The Cerebral Passion –
Plagued with horrible headaches for the first half of the day, but as soon as 3pm hits, the headaches go away. In fact, this man actually feels reenergized after 3pm! This is doing wonders for his marriage, but there’s unfortunately something inside of him and the clock is ticking…
This was so unsettling! I’m so paranoid with my body and health. If I were this man, I would have been at the doctors office the minute the “knots” showed up. Yikes! And that ending!
Midnight Grinding –
After a scare while out in a tobacco field, Rebecca tries to let go of the terror. Unfortunately, things only get more tense until she moves away. Finding herself back in her childhood home years later, the horror rushes right back to her when her children see the same scary thing while out in the fields.
This dark force has had his eyes on Rebecca for years, and it’s not about to let her go that easily.
The image that Ronald Kelly puts in readers minds right away with Rebecca’s initial sighting is one that will haunt our dreams for sure. I kept thinking things couldn’t get more tense, but they did!
My Favorite Passage from Somewhere South of Hell – Book 2
The Cerebral Passion –
The searing agony in his neck continued to intensify. It almost felt as though his head was attempting to pull itself from his body. But that was utter nonsense, wasn’t it? He knew at once that it was not as the tendons in his neck began to snap, one by one.
My Final Thoughts on Somewhere South of Hell – Book 2
Ever read a book that hits you so hard, you feel like you’ve got heartburn afterward? That was my physical reaction to this book! Ronald Kelly really hit on some nightmarish horror here.
Needless to say, this is a must read for horror fans that don’t mind walking into the darkness!
