Spruced up for Murder
by Helen Golden
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, the start of a new cozy mystery series, and I checked if and when new instalments were going to be published.
It's an excellent debut as we're introduced to the characters/setting without any info dump. Lady Beatrice is a well-developed character, a clever woman who lost her husband in a accident and suffered from the press over exposition.
She seems to be a cold and aloof woman but it's a mask to protect her from the world.
I liked her since the beginning as I liked Percy, Simon, and the other characters. They're all likeable and fleshed out.
The mystery is solid, there's enough suspects and red herrings to keep me guessing and it never drags.
The author is a good storyteller and I liked how the plot is developed and the humour. I read it in one afternoon and can't wait to read the next stories.
I appreciated how different media were used in this novel in a clever way. They're part of the story but not the only way to tell a story and the mix of traditional and new works well.
My only note: I'm not a fan of fashion label name dropping. I assume that the characters wear luxury fashion, but I don't think it's a bonus to know the label of their shoes.
This entertaining and well plotted story is highly recommended.
Many thanks to Helen Golden and Rachel's Random Resources for this digital copy, all opinions are mine
