I would say this book leans toward the younger end of middle grade. It is fun and action packed, and has definitely made me interested in finding out more about the folktales from West Bengal which the story draws upon. However, I did feel the plot and particularly the ending were not as strong as I wanted them to be; overall I was a bit disappointed as I had hoped to love the book. I am conscious though that at 34 I am not the target audience, and I suspect many children will love this novel.
I will mention that there are a couple of letters and notes in the book written in a script that I found tricky to read, so it may be even harder for a child or someone who is dyslexic.
I also have to point out that the artwork on the cover of the edition I have is utterly stunning.
