Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
4.5

Quick and easy to read, but adorably executed. Lovely characters, and Albertalli in particular does a good job of making teenagers actually seem like teenagers. You'll see some criticism of this book around a comment made by Simon about how gay girls have it easier than gay guys because straight men like lesbians, and around a supporting character being into yaoi/slash fic, but there's a purpose to these elements: teenagers are not perfect, your average teenager is not "woke", and being in a minority doesn't automatically make you well-versed and sympathetic to other minority issues. It's a realistic and very sweet portrayal of teenage love and friendship, the supposedly problematic elements are there for a good reason, and are presented as youthful naivety rather than any malicious or inherent character flaws. You can tell this is written by someone who spends a lot of time with adolescents.
