Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
by Mildred D. Taylor
This is a classic I remember from my childhood. Reading it again as an adult made the tale even more special because I have learned to read between the lines at what is really happening. It’s the 1930’s and the story follows a colonial family through the trials and tribulations of living through turbulent times. The Logan family is lucky they own their land while most of the others around them share crop. This moving story looks at social prejudice and injustices that stood the test of time for 30 years. It spawned two sequels and is still required reading in many of today’s schools.
