Only the second horror book I’ve ever read-
I thought the idea for this novel was incredibly intriguing. Very early on when Harold’s event happened, I was confused at how the story was going to continue, since it happens so early on. To be honest, I did not expect the kids to be resurrected, that took me by complete surprise. I remembered the beginning quote about a good mother always ensuring her children are fed. And I started to see where the plot was going. I think what I struggled with was I didn’t like many of the characters, Doug, Nadine, and Ramona. I found myself, annoyed, frustrated, and disgusted with many of their actions and overall obliviousness. As I read more, I saw how each character basically represented the worst aspects in humanity and how they fit in with this tragedy.
I wish that the book focus more on societies overall reactions. We saw glimpses of the overall reactions, for example, in the grocery store and the mom. But I wish we’d seen more overall. Personally I find it hard to get into a book when I don’t like the characters.
