Home After Dark by David Small

I understand that this graphic novel was written with minimal words by choice, but it left me feeling that its creator simply had nothing of importance to say. I also fail to see how coming-of-age stories about repressed, bigoted and violent young men are still seen as subversive and praise-worthy in this day and age when their creators refuse to focus on truly deconstructing those behaviors in a way that goes beyond 'this is how boys are and it's horrible'.

Minorities are always mistreated, abused and murdered in this brand of media to inspire the main 'every man' trope character and I'm sick to death of it. Nothing in this comic felt fresh or enlightening and worse, it's listed on some websites as an LGBT comic when the only LGBT character is
characterized as a pervert who is later nearly beaten to death by his community while being called slurs and hangs himself afterwards
.

I urge LGBT youth to read other stories, ones with relevant plots, fleshed out characters and hopefully a more earnest message behind it all.
