Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier
5.0

My heart has been broken and sewn together so many times now reading this book. The writing is absolutely exquisite! I love every original character, and especially the wonderful Sorcha. The plot is just woven together in such intricate delightful detail, until every thread of it shines with meaning. The camaraderie between the brothers and their sister is lovely.

I was completely absorbed in the story, and couldn't put it down. I was gripping the book so hard that the ink started to come off on my hands. I gasped in terror, and cried, and laughed right along with the characters in the book.

I love every single brother so much. It's amazing how, right from the beginning, even though there are 6 of them, each has his own original and memorable personality. I never once had to stop and think, "Wait, which brother is this again?" I remembered them all easily. Now, that is good writing!

I adore this entire story! Well, maybe not the entire story.....

SpoilerThere is one scene where Sorcha is assaulted by evil men, and the author goes into all this unnecessary detail about it. Why was that scene even necessary to the story at all? It seemed like the author was just throwing it in to be gritty and to shock the readers. It could have been more tastefully written without all the detail, or rewritten entirely without that scene. There could have been other ways to achieve the needed plot points without all that nastiness. Still, it was just one scene, and the rest of the book makes up for it wonderfully.
