Transcendence by Shay Savage
4.0

This is the most ridiculous book I have ever read and enjoyed. Not as a romance novel, because I'm sorry, but the idea of a woman doin' the do with a caveman, who is literally not a homo sapiens and is thus a different species altogether, is not something that I can get behind. The very notion of a time travelling woman being forced to spend the rest of her life devoid of language, trapped in a world in which she can't communicate in any meaningful way despite having the gift of language - that's honestly kind of terrifying. The whole cross-species angle reminded me of when I watched The Croods and got squicked out by the whole 'I'm in love with a guy who is more evolved than me' thing. Not my cup of tea. Honestly, my entire reason for reading this one was because I'm interested in books which started off as fanfiction, and it was cheap enough on Amazon to give it a go. I'm a very discerning reader.

I also found the premise of love transcending communication to be a bit flat. The protagonist here says that his love for Beh completely transcends everything and they are so close as to be one person, but honestly, I don't think they transcended anything. They didn't understand each other half the time, because Beh is trapped in a world without language which cannot understand her, and Ehd is trapped in the prison of his own mind, fated to only engage with the world on the most basic level, never truly reaching the same level of comprehension as his partner, which is a fun thought. Their bond seemed to be primarily built on the fact that Beh taught him to do some saucy sixty-ninin' and then they had a whole bunch of increasingly athletic sex. Which, hey, you do you. Caves are boring. Whatever passes the time.

Still, this book was funny and the protagonist's narrative voice was really impressively conveyed. It can't have been easy to write a character who couldn't understand language and still have him use language effectively to narrate the book, and it was done really well here. I had no reason to enjoy this book, but I totally enjoyed this book. I read it in a day. I thought that parts of it were endearing, other parts were just hilarious (usually intentionally) and it was always compelling enough, for whatever reason, to make me stay up late to finish it. That's a win in my book. I have no qualms giving it 4 stars. Although if I have another dream tonight in which I'm a caveman and can't communicate effectively with the world around me, leaving me floundering in an abyss of misunderstandings and isolation, I'm docking one.
