Silence Fallen
by Patricia Briggs
Silence Fallen is the tenth book in the Mercy Thompson series, an urban fantasy series about a Coyote walker. This is the first time I have read this book. Unlike the earlier books, I have reread them multiple times. Being so far in the series I will stay away from spoilers.
I think Patricia Briggs does a good job of keeping away from repeating the same formula for each book. There is growth and progress. However, the ninth book in the series was a bit boring. The tenth was different. There was a different structure. She played with time and POV. There was even a twist that I didn’t expect because I didn’t know to expect it.
I respect and enjoyed the experimentation. However, I also do not think it all worked. It was not as polished as previous books. Not just the structure, but the actual writing. I’m torn because I am glad she did it, I just wish she had done it better.
My one complaint is all the backstory. We are ten books in, if someone is jumping into the story now that is on them. We were 200 pages in still getting in-depth background on previous books. It wasn’t just hinted in case it has been a while since you read the books, it was whole paragraphs of information.
So, I loved the book and I didn’t love it. But the ending… was brilliant. And I felt like I should have realized it and just didn’t. Those are the best kind of endings.
