An outstanding sophomore effort to read after the author’s debut. This book follows Perry Firekeeper-Birch 10 years after the setting of the first book. Perry is now 16, and she, her twin sister Pauline, and other teens from her tribe are doing a summer internship program. There is mystery, adventure, and education for us as readers to the heartbreak and pain of the Indigenous People have had to suffer for generations. The author’s descriptions, attention to details, and references at the end make this another powerful book. Some parts of the storyline I predicted, others not so much. I would love to keep reading about the Firekeeper-Birch clan and Sugar Island. I forced myself to only listen to bits at a time to savor my time in this special place.
