Put simply, I loved this book.
When I first started reading it, I wasn't quite sure. It took a little while before I was truly invested in the story (which is the key reason I haven't given it a full 5 stars). However, each chapter I read interested me more than the one before, and after a while I simply could not put the book down. I read it all in one sitting and at the end was left feeling desperate for the sequel (which is due in spring 2022).
The characters are really loveable, with wonderful friendships. The worldbuilding and magic system are imaginative and delightful, with great use made of the historical setting. The plot was interesting and fun, albeit occasionally predictable (as an adult reader at least). Most of all, I loved the writing, which was excellent.
The audiobook is narrated by the author, who is a professional actress and does a simply brilliant job. She makes every character distinct, and also injects joy into her storytelling - at times, I could practically hear the smile on her face.
I also have to give a quick mention to the illustrations by Paola Escobar. In addition to a beautiful dustjacket, the book also has a lovely hidden/naked cover, as well as numerous black and white illustrations inside.
I highly recommend this book to any child or adult who enjoys reading children's fantasy adventure stories.
