The Game by Leonor Soliz

Beta read: Holy crap this is good, even in this unfinished stage! Can't wait to see how it turns out when it's done.

Arc read: I had the great pleasure of beta reading this & now reading the ARC, and it's been an honor (and fun!) to see where it ended up. It's yet another (sort of) second chance romance (a theme for me this month) and this time in the football world. I really enjoyed it and really do believe that Leonor's writing gets better and better with each book, and that this is her best yet!
It isn't technically second chance as far as they had a relationship & love and then were separated, but more that they meet and have a one night stand where he wants more but she disappears into the night. It's more that they're righting a missed opportunity when they reunite as coworkers, him a professional football player & her working in PR. She is assigned to help the new quarterback become more approachable & likeable because he's closed off and scowly, and doesn't give good interviews. They pretend not to remember the other at first and he decides to start playing a one sided game where he tries to subtly remind her until she remembers & brings it up.
They're both still attracted but try to ignore it as they spend more time together & both let down their walls to get to know each other. He tries to stay private because his dad was football royalty & he wants to do things of his own merit; whereas she keeps to herself because she doesn't want more people who rely on her, as she's had to have a lot of responsibility for her parents since she was young, as they were immigrants who made some unfortunate financial choices & couldn't always navigate the systems themselves. Together, they find their true place in the found family of the team, and fall in love.
I really enjoyed their banter and chemistry, and all the bread crumb clues for future books. As always, I love how Leonor writes plus-sized characters, the way their bodies are described and admired. And the scene where they finally talk about their history? SO GOOD!
Thank you, again, for having me read for you, both the beta version & this ARC!
