I did not want to review this book negatively, because R. A. Bea is clearly a talented writer. The language and storytelling was beautiful. For a young adult book, the characters were a perfect found family, with lots of banter and wit. They reminded me of the classic trope; fun young group of vigilantes.
 
However, this book made no sense. I could not fathom what was happening in each chapter very well, and had to reread many sections to understand the plot. I realise this is the first book in a series, but there was no natural ending or cliff-hanger. It was as though R. A. Bea had so many magical fascinating ideas that they overflowed from the page and created nonsense. For example, the multiple P.O.V would suddenly introduce the perspective of a background character I did not recognise but was expected to understand. It was therefore a very slow read and not particularly enjoyable, although I usually like a Y.A fantasy. I will not be buying the second book!
