apricotjoy 's review for:
The Year of Magical Thinking
by Joan Didion
I read this book quickly, over a couple of days. Her experience of grief and 'vortexes' and feeling that the person who has died will return... rang very painfully true for me. I also enjoy the methodical way she describes events and procedures and memories.
Tying into that methodical description though, were so many details about her life that I couldn't relate to. There were many times I put the book down because I was rolling my eyes so hard I couldn't focus on the words. Do we /really/ need to know that they got their basketball tickets from the commissioner of the NBA? How many times can she tell us that they regularly stayed at the Beverly Wilshire? I realize that's the reality of her life, but oftentimes the luxury details felt unnecessary.
Anyway, that being said, I think it's worth reading -- especially if you are grieving.
