ellornaslibrary 's review for:
Apex Magazine Issue 99
by Jason Sizemore, Amy H. Sturgis
Not sure when this shifted to Apex Magazine, when I only left a review for the short story Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™ by Rebecca Roanhorse originally. I did not read this magazine, just the short story above..
I came across this as a recommendation for Task #9(**A book of colonial or postcolonial literature) in Book Riot's Read Harder Challenge. I like reading challenges as I find they tend to broaden my reading range. Not that I don't usually read a range of genres, just that this is another way to go farther afield than normal. This was one such experience as I've not had this come to my attention before which is a shame. It was such a powerful, moving read that'll stay with me for a long time. I'd like to give a more in-depth review, really, as I feel like this does the story an injustice except this story has left me feeling much I need to process. Perhaps in future I'll be able to do that, but for now I'm just going to suggest that you read it yourself.
**Note if you're doing a challenge: Yes, it says book, but it does not have to be a book. Short stories are suggested on many lists where it states book. Also, don't be tripped up by the literature label. There's plenty of sci-fi, fantasy, spec fic, non fiction, etc. that can suit the task.
