myntop 's review for:
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
by Betty Smith
This book was selected for the All Urbandale Reads program in my city. Seeing as how it's such a well loved book, I fully expected to love it as well. Unfortunately, I seem to be in the minority. I did not love this book...I barely liked it. For me, it was dull and dragged on and on and on. There were a few parts that I loved, or that made me gasp, but on the whole I felt like it was a lot of unnecessary words and explanations.
I did like some parts and get emotionally invested in some things. Francie's relationship with Lee, Sissy's pregnancies, some of the death. But mostly I struggled to not fall asleep. It also jumped around a lot in the beginning. It was Francie young, and then Francie a grown woman, and then Francie being born, and then Francie young again, and then Francie's parents meeting. I think it would have flowed better for me if it had been written more chronologically.
Because of the content, I can get why this is such a beloved book, it just wasn't the book for me.
