booksare42 's review for:
Advocatus
by A.R. Turner
I received a copy of this book as part of the blog tour hosted by The Write Reads. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
As someone who works in a law office, I tend to avoid reading books that have anything to do with lawyers or the legal field because I would prefer to escape from my day job when I’m reading. I’m very glad that I broke my rule and decided to read and review this book because it was fantastic and I really enjoyed it.
Advocatus follows Felix, a lawyer who has defended all sorts of defendants during his career. He’s honest, and clever, and he really tries his hardest to find a defense for all of his clients.
This book is a little bit confusing at times because there is a lot going on, but everything ties together by the end. The largest section of this book tells the story of wanderers Farbo and Helda, and how they ended up rescuing the witch Racelsus and the trial that Felix represents them at. The final section of this book is about Felix being chosen to defend whether humanity should continue to exist, before Habeus, the God of Justice. Throughout the entire book, there are journal entries about previous cases that Felix handled.
My favourite thing about this book was Felix. I thought he was a very memorable character and I loved him. I liked that he knew that he was in over his head, but he tried as hard as he could to defend his clients. I also liked that he was looking for his place in the world and that he was able to find it. I also liked the supporting characters in this book, and I especially liked Farbo and his fascination with doors.
Another thing I really enjoyed about this book was the journal entries at the end of the chapters. I liked reading about previous cases that Felix argued and seeing how they concluded. I would definitely read an entire book about Felix discussing his previous cases.
I liked the fantasy element in this book. This book takes place in a world with humanity, but it also features all sorts of other beings like witches, goblins, demons, time travelers, etc. I liked that the fantasy element wasn’t too heavy because I tend to struggle when the world building becomes too much.
Of the story lines in this book, I preferred the one about Farbo and Helda and the witch Racelsus. I liked Farbo and Helda’s story and I liked their adventures, I would be interested in reading an entire book about their adventures. I also enjoyed the case about defending humanity, even though there were a lot of cringy moments when arguments didn’t necessarily go as planned.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was unique and I liked how everything came together. I liked the characters and I will definitely keep an eye out for the next book in this series.
