To the Land of Long Lost Friends by Alexander McCall Smith
2.0

This was the first book I’ve read as part of this series and I was gutted that I just couldn’t get into it. Maybe it was due to my own pre-expectations? I’m not sure.

I expected a lot more mystery about this “mysterious reverend” but it hardly seemed to be touched upon. I wanted to see more of the detective work and what they did there.

I absolutely loved the characters. I thought they were brilliant, very real, very wholesome and sometimes quite comical. They were really lovely characters to read about and I imagine I’d have learnt a lot more if I’d read the series from the beginning.

While the scenery was beautiful and Botswana was painted so lovely, I felt the dialogue was over described. It was very much “X said this to Y, and Y said to X and X said to Y”, it made everything feel a bit disjointed and I found myself skimming a lot of it because I was really struggling to engage with it.

However, this is just my opinion. I don’t believe this is a bad book at all but it just wasn’t for me and I couldn’t engage with the writing style unfortunately.
