It's mildly disappointing when the sequel to a five star book doesn't quite have the same five star feel. Despite that, The Unbound Empire is a great book. It's thrilling, tense and political, and wraps up a brilliant trilogy. Throughout this trilogy the main character has changed significantly and I love to see that progression. 

The ending of the book is exactly what I wanted it to be. It's hard to say too much without spoilers, and look away now if you don't want to be spoiled even for the tone of the ending, but sufficit to say that there are certain elements another author might have wrapped up nicely with a "happy ever after", while Caruso opts for a more bittersweet ending. I find this much more credible in the context of the story, more true to the characters, and ultimately more satisfying.
