To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini
3.0

Generally readable, but not flawless by any means. I generally liked the characters, but found the book to be a unpolished. There was a large amount of wish-fulfillment and deus ex machinaing, which I thought weakened the book overall. And the battles tended to go on and be a little boring. That being said, there were a lot of big and interesting concepts in the book. I enjoyed the science behind the FTL travel, and toward the end some of the technology behind some earlier feats started to make a little more sense. Unfortunately, I don't feel like the "mystery powers" were really set up as a mystery, so there was no sense of "aha! That's the answer".

In the end, it felt like a slightly less-grown-up The Expanse, which isn't the worst thing in the world. Recommended if you're looking for a rollicking read.
