simonlorden 's review for:
The Veil
by Kala Godin
inspiring
mysterious
fast-paced
(I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.)
I enjoyed the themes of gods, magic and disability in Kala Godin's last poetry collection, and this one also had similar themes, with empowering messages for disabled people. One of my favourite poems was the one that described chronic pain in terms of natural phenomena.
Unfortunately there were a lot of poems that didn't really get an emotional reaction from me, which is what I'm looking for in poetry books, but maybe they resonate more with others. There were also some interpretations of Greek myths that are personally not my preferred ones, but the beauty of Greek myths of is that we can interpret them all in different ways, so that was more of a personal problem.
One thing that kinda bugged me about the formatting is that most of the lines had commas at the end, even when
a,
poem,
was,
written,
like,
this,
with,
one,
word,
per,
line,
and while I generally like that style, I feel like the commas really ruined it.
This was still a good collection, but I personally liked Witchcraft and Monsters more.
