I'm so glad I revisited this book - it's so much more atmospheric than I remembered, and I feel like I have a much better appreciation for quite how ground-breaking it was, not just for openly depicting a lesbian relationship but for the way it subverted gender norms of the era and paved the way for the vampire fiction we know and love today.

Having first come across the story of Carmilla in the webseries, I was unsure of whether or not I would enjoy the book, but it exceeded my expectations! It was a very gripping read, with the relationship between Carmilla and Laura running alongside the story brilliantly. It was the perfect antidote to many new YA novels, having been one of the books to really establish the vampire's traits and habits. My one small complaint would be that Laura is really not the brightest; I found myself getting so frustrated at how slow she was being! Apart from that, though, this was a brilliant read that I would highly recommend.
