The Secret Horses of Briar Hill
by Megan Shepherd
When I was in elementary school I read a book called Afternoon of the Elves. And I thought it was a book about elves.
I read it again at 21. It was not a book about elves.
This is one of those books that is really two stories. One, for children, about a girl who sees horses in mirrors and must rescue one when it comes through to her side. And another, for adults, about a girl with tuberculosis who cannot cope with the loss of her family amidst a backdrop of the second world war.
I would recommend both stories.
