The Exact Opposite of Okay
by Laura Steven
DID NOT FINISH: 15%
I listened to this on audiobook so it might not be only be the writing that turned me away from this book but I could not make it past 15%. The humour just did not land for me, almost every joke felt like the author was desperately trying to be funny but it just wasn't hitting. I feel like all the jokes in the book would have been semi funny in a tweet or in isolation but having the same type of jokes in the narration over and over again really annoyed me even though I thought I would get used to it. I did not.
All the political commentary also frustrated me, I usually like that sort of things in books and I agreed with all the stuff she was saying but everything was just so on the nose. Like randomly throwing trump under the bus for a quick laugh is low hanging fruit, yes I hate him but "haha trump bad" humour grew tired in 2017, especially when you have nothing original to add.
Also every single one of Izzy's thought processes about every topic was so meticulous to the point where it felt like one of those stories you tell to five year olds to to help them understand empathy. Just felt like the author was constantly talking down to the reader, like I know how to think bro, you don't have to teach me how to be nice to my friends and explain every single little thing, I understand what's happening now shut up.
I think if I actually read it instead of listening to the audiobook I might have enjoyed it slightly more or at least finished it but at this point I cannot be bothered to try again.
