Anya's Ghost
by Vera Brosgol
I quite enjoyed this book, even though it was not what I was expecting. I have to remind myself that First Second is not just for kids. This is a very YA book and that is okay. Anya is an immigrant who has done lots of work to lose her accent and fit in better. But she is still a bit of an outcast. One day she falls into a well and ends up taking a ghost with her when she is rescued. This ghost becomes a best friend, and helps her come out of her shell and go after what she wants. However, this ghost has a dark side, and Anya is going to see it, and realize that it reflects her dark side. Then she must work to overcome it. I liked this story. I love how the illustrator keeps everything in a blue tone with some occasional red. It makes the story stand out. I also like some of the side stories like Anya’s russian ness and how she hates being reminded of it. Or how she is constantly worried about her weight. It’s very american, very entertaining, and really worth the read.
