Eh. That's basically my review. I feel like this book could have been good. I loved the premise, ex-guardswoman runs away with powerful mage girlfriend to start a tea and book shop. However the writing needed some work, it felt clunky and under-edited. I didn't find the characters well developed and it felt like they kept having the same relationship arguments over and over again. Which, I admit, it not a bad depiction of two people trying to have a relationship together and living together for the first time, but it doesn't make for a very compelling story. It sort of felt like I was sitting in on someone's couple's therapy session.
The plot could have been tighter too. The dragon egg plot line felt a little bit tacked on, and the queen's guard threat would have been good, but it almost felt forgotten at times. And the bandit threat couldn't have actually been very dangerous because they were routed off page in the past and it never came up again.
I wanted to like this more, but it just didn't deliver.
