Daughter of the Siren Queen
by Tricia Levenseller
— 3.5* stars —
Well, I almost didn't read this one. I read the first book of this duology almost two years ago and I didn't really feel like picking this one up. I could've read it right after the first one, but I didn't for some reason.
I hesitated for a long time, and almost decided against it, but I'm glad I read it. Daughter of the Siren Queen was a good surprised.
The tone felt different from the first one (a little more light I guess), but that may be because I read Daughter of the Pirate King almost two years ago. I enjoyed following the characters and being back into this world where Alosa, the MC, had to face new challenges. I like seeing her train to gain control of herself (though the reason of her control felt too simple to me), and navigate through her relationship with the crew. The new characters were really interesting and likable, and I like their role in this book. I also liked Alosa's relationship with Riden, the way it was slowly coming together. I like seeing them together and interact with each other. I also liked the writing, with these witty dialogues as well as some cute parts.
As for the plot, it was not very surprising but it was still gripping. I enjoyed the second half of the book way more than the first, that I found a bit meh. The second part was more action packed, had more training and overall was more to my taste.
This book was a fast read. I would advise to read the series back to back, or not wait two years like I did.
My pick for the Defense Against the Dark Arts class - Grindylows: book set at the sea/coast
