The Emerald Circus
by Jane Yolen
This anthology was a real mixed bag, which is somewhat standard for this kind of book. There are stories that I absolutely loved, Andersen's Witch, The Lost Girls, and Our Lady of the Greenwood, while there were others that I wondered why they were even included, like The Bird and Belle Bloody Merciless Dame. This is my first encounter with Yolen and I think I'm somewhat lukewarm towards her. If I ever read anymore of her books I would probably make sure that it would be something that really interests me.
There is also a bit of overkill in this anthology, with two Alice in Wonderland stories and three that deal with the King Arthur mythos. I'm not saying this anthology doesn't have variety. Where else could I find a book that not only has Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz joining a circus, but also has Emily Dickinson being abducted by an alien? It was just odd to have so many similar stories in one collection, at least with one that doesn't have a obvious theme.
This anthology is good for a few stories, but really that's about it. I recommend the ones I listed before and also Blown Away, Evian Steel, and Sister Emily's Lightship. Also, possibly The Gift of the Magicians, but only because that ending is so hilarious.
