fictionalfelix 's review for:
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
by Mackenzi Lee
Note: It has come to my attention that Mackenzi Lee has engaged in quite a bit of problematic behavior that I do not support, so please keep in mind that my review and high rating only reflects my enjoyment of the book and does not mean that I support the author.

This is late, but I finally got around to writing an actual review of this. So:
The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
Genre: Historical YA romantic comedy; m/m romance
My current rating: 4.5 stars
Short Summary: Nothing goes as planned on Henry (Monty) Montague's Grand Tour of Europe. . .
>> TRIGGER WARNINGS: Child abuse, alcohol use, suicidal thoughts, racism, sexism, homophobia, some sexual content<<
My thoughts:
Plot: 3 stars
Yes, it's a bit contrived, and too convenient. But the plot is so layered and full of subplots that I can almost forgive how contrived the main plot is.
Characters: 4.75 stars
•Monty: He's very insufferable, especially at the beginning, but his character arc is amazing.
•Percy: I don't know how, but I hated Percy originally. I have no idea why, because I liked him a lot on the second reading; he's so sweet.
•Felicity: My favorite character ever, almost. She was a bit annoying in that "sodomy is a sin" scene, but I think she was supposed to represent the popular opinion of the day on the topic.
Writing: 5 stars
I love the writing style; it's so fun and well-written and. . . I'm gushing, aren't I?
Setting: 3 stars
Intentionally anachronistic, and the heart thing was rather. . . random, I don't know.
Romance: 5 stars
Pay attention, folks, because this is the first and only time so far that you will witness me ship anyone. But I ship Monty and Percy.
Themes: 5.5 stars
That's all I have to say about the theme.

"We are not broken things, neither of us. We are cracked pottery mended with laquer and flakes of gold, whole as we are, complete unto each other. Complete and worthy and so very loved."
That's all I have to say about the theme.
