If It Bleeds
by Stephen King
2.5 stars rounded up
1. Mr. Harrigan's Phone - this was so close to being creepy and atmospheric but fell short. The scary thing about it was how much I had to think about iPhones. The whole pirate user thing felt like it was going somewhere, then never did. Underwhelming.
2. The Life of Chuck - I liked part 1 of the story and then wasn't as dedicated in part 2. Again, it had a good concept, and I liked what he said about it in the author's note, but it felt like it was going somewhere and then never went back to it. Nothing was explained even at all which made it not that good.
3. If It Bleeds - Sequel to the outsider (?) which I started and never got through, if this is a sign I should go back to it I'm not sure I should take it. This was the longest one and for what. For the first half of the story I genuinely had 0 idea what was going on. The second half was interesting and I liked the suspense and fast-paced of the story. By the end I was just wishing it would be over soon.
4. Rat - I liked how short it was. I liked this story the best. This is the closest to horror, but not there yet. I could see this as a more developed novel/novella and I would have liked it more.
I like Kings horror work best so this just wasn't for me... always good writing and a fun author's note but there's much better short stories by him.
