The Girl from Venice by Martin Cruz Smith
2.0

I received a free digital copy of this book by the author/publishers via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book is set in Italy during WW2 and focuses on a fisherman called Cenzo who finds the body of a girl in a lagoon. The girl however is not dead and is on the run from the Nazis. Cenzo ends up helping her and gets roped into a strange world of fascists, Nazis and movie stars.

This book ended up being really disappointing for me. The start of it started out pretty well and I liked how Cenzo met Giulia. I also loved the Venetian setting and it's made me decide I'm definitely visiting Italy again next year! however the story started getting a bit boring for me and I just couldn't see where it was going. I didn't really like Giulia. I found her to be quite ungrateful considering this guy had saved her from being captured and I didn't see the allure of her that Cenzo seemed to see. She came across quite up herself and bland. I also fely like all the relationships that happened in this book were very forced and unnatural. They ended up together because it's like the author expected the readers to want it but the characters had no chemistry whatsoever.

This was a fast paced and easy to read book, and while i enjoyed learning more about Italy during WW2 it's definitely not something I would be picking up again.
